The Longyear Museum of Anthropology welcomed the member of the Navajo Nation and fashion designer to campus as part of the Not a Costume exhibit

As Halloween approaches, the issue of cultural appropriation in costumes is brought to the fore. To address stereotypes and celebrate indigenous identities, the Longyear Museum of Anthropology opened the Not a Costume exhibition on Sept. 27. “We felt it was important that the exhibition coincided with Halloween so we get people to think critically about […]

Congratulations to Maggie Dunne ’13 and Ryan Smith ’13, each of whom has made an appearance on one of Forbes magazine’s 30 Under 30 lists. Dunne, who double majored in Native American studies and religion, founded Lakota Children’s Enrichment, Inc., (LCE) while still in high school. As a Ƶ sophomore, she joined the university’s Thought Into Action […]

Using the night sky to explain the culture of different societies is a practice familiar to Professor Anthony Aveni. In early December, the distinguished astronomy and anthropology professor co-hosted a symposium intended to spark a dialogue about Native American sacred sites and exploring their connections to cosmic events.

John Trudell’s lecture at Golden Auditorium was anything but conventional. A veritable man of many trades, from activist for the American Indian movement to author to musician  to poet, Trudell visited campus November 7 to speak on “Intelligence as Alternative Energy.”

(LCE), a non-profit foundation dedicated to promoting awareness and assistance to families on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, invited Professor. Peter Balakian, a […]

A nonprofit organization created by Maggie Dunne ‘13 has been named one of the top five “literacy champions” of 2012 by Scholastic, a welcome recognition of her efforts to help residents of the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Dunne’s nonprofit — recently renamed Lakota Children’s Enrichment (LCE) — was cited for its efforts in […]
